Let this stand for about thirty similar articles from similar people. So closely do they adhere to the Party Line that the articles are almost interchangable, as is the phrasing, which shows distinct signs of being read off of a card or something.*
Ostensibly the article is a complaint about the media kowtowing to the pro-America line, and a bitter shot at Fox News, which is eating everyone else's lunch right now. You know why Fox is winning the ratings race, and so does Konner, although she pretends that it's simply because Fox is more enthusiastic and entertaining (it reminds me of when Reagan was President, and the standard leftist position was that he appealed to people because of his winning personality. No liberal could possibly believe that it was because of his politics, positions, and morality.)
From there, the article quickly degrades into general complaints about the lack of strong government controls on the press, (THAT would show those bastards at Fox!) and then finally the standard anti-Bush Democratic propaganda:
...The budget surplus has disappeared down a rabbit hole of tax cuts and post-Sept. 11 emergencies that sprung the lock on the lockbox of Social Security. This matters to a lot of citizens dependent on Social Security benefits in the future, who will find they are as poor as the Enron employees whose retirement funds were tied up in a politically well-connected company engaging in deceptive accounting processes.
See? Tax cuts, somehow threatening those poor elderly, which Democrats routinely haul out every election to terrify them into voting for them.
Why is it that tax cuts always threaten the mythical Social Security "lock box," but massive spending increases never do?
Then there is the falsely labeled "economic stimulus package," aimed not at temporary measures to get the economy going again but at long-term and retroactive tax giveaways to corporations and the wealthiest Americans - gifts that come without any quid-pro-quo requirements that could connect legislative intent to the desired outcome.
Again, at the risk of being tedious, notice the liberal view of returning your tax money as a "giveaway." A "gift." On the other hand, massive wealth redistribution programs like Medicare, which actually are gifts from the taxpayers, are referred to as "entitlements." But that's another story.
Not to mention energy policy, campaign finance reform, setbacks for anti-trust laws, defense spending, the health-care crisis, the impending states' deficit crisis and many other issues that comprise the serious and essential side of informing the public.
If you've ever discussed anything with a leftist, you will notice that they have a hard time not emptying the entire bucket of liberal issues no matter what the actual subject is. This is a common feature of liberals who call in to talk shows, and it can be quite entertaining. It's a lot like trying to discuss the subject of lunar ice with james.
I caught this article on the Drudge Report, which also included a reference to an old article written during Drudge's legal problems a few years back. The article contained a snide dig at Drudge by Konner, who viewed Drudge not as a journalist, but as a backfence gossip.
Another journalism professor complaining...
