From the New York Times, discussing the presence of so many conservative books on the NYT Best Seller list. Now, as I have mentioned, being on this list is no sign of objective quality (a bio of Gene Simmons currently resides at number 14), but it is not without significance either.
Nothing much to add to the article, except a comment on the author's speculation on why conservative books are doing well:
...It may simply be that conservatives are writing books of political thought and moderates and liberals aren't. It may be that conservatives are simply more interesting when they do write and talk, and get to an audience's belly in a way that liberals and moderates don't. Or it may simply be that if you are a publisher and want to make money, the conservative writers with their broadcasting celebrity will attract the readers, so that's where you put your chips.
Shades of Ronald Reagan. Liberals will cast far and wide for reasons why conservatives appeal to the public, and this one is no exception.
- There are no moderate or liberal books being written.
- Conservatives are more interesting (Reagan had this GREAT PERSONALITY!)
- Conservatives can use their broadcasting celebrity (whatever THAT is) to sell books.
As it was with Ronald Reagan and other conservatives who have gained popularity and won elections, the one reason for their popularity that no liberal can possibly consider as valid is that conservative philosophies and ideas are being perceived by people as reasonable, sensible, moral, and aligned with the American values that built this country. The standard leftist ideas have been shown to be none of these, and utterly bankrupt.*
BTW, it is worth noting in the article how difficult it is to get conservative books published. It is well-known that most mainstream publishers have a distinct leftward tilt.
Newsmax.com offers a slightly more opinionated view of this NYT article here.
*Or, to use a favorite phrase from one of my ancestors, "as full of shit as a Christmas goose."
