The Singaporean arrested in Afghanistan is a father of five whose family kept largely to itself, said a neighbour.

While the Foreign Ministry tries to repatriate Mohammad Aslam Yar Ali Khan, his family had moved out of their three-room flat in Yishun Avenue 6. Neighbour Rahman Samat, 51, said he had no clue where they were.

The office printing assistant said in Malay, “They were still here during Hari Raya last month. But a few days after that, they were gone.”

He also knew nothing about Mohammad Aslam's suspected links with terrorist network Al-Qaeda, until reporters came knocking.

He said, “We didn't talk much but he always smiled when we passed each other.”
