I'm sure similar things are hapening everywhere the torch goes.

The torch came to Spokane last night, here is an excerpt from a local article:

The most touching moment of the torch relay was provided by Spokane's Tom Higgins. Paralyzed from the waist down, Higgins rose from his wheelchair and walked with the help of a special device the final few feet of his relay leg as hundreds looked on, many with tears in their eyes.
Higgins is known as the "sled hero" after jumping in front of a speeding sled to save a child two years ago. The accident left him paralyzed. Higgins was a hero again last night.
"It was fantastic", said Higgins. "I'm glad I did it. Thanks to all the support, I can't thank everyone enough. It was just wonderful."

This is IMO the spirit of the Olympics. Extraordinary individuals being recognized.

Of course than the torch was passed to local politicians, and I just changed the channel.
