Assistant U.S. Attorney David Kelley said the government was insisting that Lindh remain in custody because of the risk that he would try to flee and because of his potential danger to the community. Sewell granted the request.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Reuters
John Walker Lindh, the captured al-Qaida fighter charged with conspiring to kill Americans in the war in Afghanistan, was ordered held without bond Thursday after being presented to a federal court.

Dressed in a green prisoner jumpsuit, his hair closely cut and beard shaved, Walker said quietly "yes, I understand" when the four charges against him were read at the U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

Walker, who goes by his mother's last name, was charged last week with conspiring to kill Americans abroad and providing support to two terrorist groups including Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network, blamed by Washington for the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States that killed more than 3,000 people.

Walker also is accused of engaging in prohibited transactions with the deposed Taliban government that harbored bin Laden.

After reading him his rights and accepting his attorneys, Magistrate Judge W. Curtis Sewell ordered the 20-year-old held without bail until his Feb. 6 preliminary and detention hearings.
