BEAVER FALLS, PA
"Every time we turned around, someone else wanted to give money," said Bud Anderson, assistant fire chief, who helped collect the money. "People were just dropping off money."

Since Sept. 11, city firefighters have been collecting donations through various drives to benefit the families of firefighters who died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York. The efforts netted $20,600 and concluded in late December. All of the money was sent recently to the International Association of Fire Fighters and will be distributed among the victims' families.

"I never thought we'd get to $20,000," said Capt. Gerry Weatherly.

Other departments assisted firefighters in their efforts.

Chippewa Township and Big Beaver firefighters teamed for a spaghetti dinner that generated $1,000. Patterson Township firefighters and Beaver Falls police also sent in donations. And New Brighton firefighters contributed by helping to collect money at Geneva College and Beaver Falls High School football games.

Churches, clubs, business owners and residents also contributed hefty donations, such as Beaver Falls chiropractor J.T. Gump, who donated $1,000. "So many children were left without their fathers, and this will help with their education," Weatherly said.

Though Beaver Falls has ceased its fund-raiser, anyone interested in sending money may send checks directly to New York Firefighters 9-11
Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 65858, Washington, D.C., 20035-5858. The checks should be payable to New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Fund.

"It's touching to know that people actually care," said Fire Chief Mark Stowe.
