Re: WHAT'S NEW Friday, 15 Feb 02

<1. CREATIONISM: THIS ROSE, BY ANY OTHER NAME, STILL SMELLS.

Creationists use the term "intelligent design" to cover their tracks, much the same way as socialists are now "progressives." Of course the logical flaw in the assumption that all complexity demands a creator, is that it has some difficulty explaining the origins of the creator. This is usually pointed out by small children in Sunday school ("So who made God?") before their ability to use logic is suppressed.

It would be funny if someone would prepare a formal educational program showing how human evolution may actually have been driven by aliens from other worlds, and distribute it to all schools forced to discuss "intelligent design." It would certainly fit the curriculum requirement, wouldn't it? "Now today, kids, we'll watch '2001' and discuss the implications. Billy, today you get to throw the bone in the air."

2. GLOBAL WARMING: INDUSTRY HAILS BUSH'S BOLD LEADERSHIP.

While this isn't as satisfying as the destruction of advanced civilization that the radical environmentalists are shooting for, tax credits are a start. I thought such programs were already in place, as well as any number of laws on pollution. Maybe I'm mistaken. Remember when discussing global warming, that no scientist ever got a grant by saying that there is no problem.

Now what really would have been bold leadership would have been a revamping of our nuclear power program, supporting the construction of new, safer power plants and a breeder infrastructure for recycling and disposing of old nuclear fuel. Instead we are burying waste, and perfectly good fuel, deep in the ground where we can't get at it again if we come up with a better way. Bad idea.

3. R&D BUDGET: CONCERNS ARE VOICED OVER PORTFOLIO BALANCE.

This is interesting. Are there more references on this? I would be interested in the breakdowns. I know a lot of politically-correct research falls under this category.

4. THE MORATORIUM: A VALENTINE TO BUSH FROM 75 LAWMAKERS.

It's about time we started working on these things again. For all the superstition wrapped around nuclear weapons, they are basically just another way to create a large bang. Over the years, warhead research has concentrated on much smaller warheads more precisely delivered. No one is interested in "city-busters" any more. I call this good news.
