I spoke with some folks and the real goal here - is to "even the playing field."
Already by planting this bit, and publicly revealing it - is really a ploy in itself to discredit news agencies.
The US during the Afghanistan campaign has suffered three primary assaults by the press:
1) Invincible Afghani Propaganda to discourage US engagement.
2) Portraying the US as a human rights violator.
3) Assaulting President Bush's leadership and decisions to increase domestic security.
Now, with this statement ALL news items are suspect. 5% of reporters stories are pure fabrications anyway, and another 70% are engineered & slanted news briefs.
So the Executive branch has decided to wake up folks - because now people will look at all pieces with a skeptical eye. Since all too many folks get their news spoon-fed like baby food and take it all at face value and let the reporters form their opinions, this policy is needed to interrupt that spoon-feeding.
The sleeping giant is awakening and some folks with brain cells left are making key decisions to insure global security and a progressive future for mankind.
Yes, I can hear the foreign governments whining now from the left about the US becoming the SS...and Bush being a dictator. They are really sad that the US is waking up and is going to fight fire with fire.
Remember what Rumsfeld said about isolating all the various threats to the US and dealing with each - this is simply part of that policy, as the media represents one of the greatest threat to the US by trying to control the minds of the American people.

PS
If any of you saw Bush a couple of weeks ago with the book "Bias" under his arm - you will know that this policy is truly EOP and not DOD based. ;-)
