"To suggest that they're defeated would be wrong," Rumsfeld told CBS' Face the Nation.

WASHINGTON -- NYDN
Osama Bin Laden's whereabouts remain a mystery, but the hunt for the Al Qaeda boss won't end until the U.S. knows what has become of the planet's most wanted man, officials said yesterday.

"We see snippets that he is, snippets that he isn't, and the short answer is we've not seen any hard evidence that he is alive in recent weeks," Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told "Fox News Sunday" that Bin Laden is likely alive.

The U.S. still is bombing areas periodically along the Afghan-Pakistani border. One recent assault involved an unmanned drone that fired on what was thought to be a group of Al Qaeda leaders — possibly including Bin Laden. DNA tests are being conducted on their remains.
