I was really upset when SketchUp dropped the dwg conversion from their free program, and I told them so. But I was already a Pro User, so it really didn't matter.
I still use the conversion to create skp models from my CAD geologiy models. However, for other modeling, I have been forcing myself to create skp models entirely in SketchUp, just to get to know the program better. All my GIS models are in AutoCad 2012, all the house plans are in SketchUp.
With SKP pro, you can create dynamic components, which are really fun...doors that open, etc.
