One assumes that the robot's programming, once approved by all, was deliberately designed to be beyond the access of the humans (aliens?) once the system was activated. Theoretically, this would make the robots incorruptible.
Of course, this was the premise behind D. F. Jones' "Colossus" as well, and we all saw how that turned out.
