JAKARTA
President Megawati Sukarnoputri warned on Sunday that violence and separatist movements could lead to the break up of the vast island nation.
Speaking to a vast crowd of around 15,000 members of her Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in Medan, the capital city of Sumatra, she said "Our national integrity is facing serious threats,”
"The country is still in a fragile state ... with several regions hit by violence and conflict,” she went on, calling on members of the national elite to stop politicking and work together to solve the problems facing the country.
"At this point when our country needs co-operation to get out from crisis, everyone is busy with internal politics,” the president said.
