In short, they weren't as clueless as today's reporters
Some of the reporters in the Vietnam era had military experience. Very few of today's reporters have served in the military, especially on the network news. This isn't meant as a put down to anyone, but the sad fact is that those who've never served in the military just don't understand it. It's a very different way of life compared to the civilian world.
