While Irak was easy, being sand and flat all over, Vietnam was hell because of the forests; every tree capable of hiding the enemy.
Afghanistan seems in between (closer to Irak) but full of caves, holes. Are there so many that nobody knows where they can hide?
Besides, hiding in a cave isn't very practical as you don't know what's going on outside and your back is on the wall: no way to run, but outside, where the other side is.
