The U.K.'s mandate to lead the international security force in the Afghan capital expires this month, and Germany has no intention of assuming the burden, Schroeder yesterday told Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Germany will only support an attack on Iraq that has been sanctioned by the United Nations, government spokeswoman said.
Expanding the U.S.-led war against terrorism to include the overthrow of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein must be carried out under UN auspices, government spokesman Charima Reinhardt cited Schroeder on Wednesday as telling a group of German intellectuals who included Nobel Prize-winning author Guenter Grass.
“Otherwise, Germany will not participate. That's our basic position which is known to the U.S,” Reinhardt told a press conference. Germany “won't pursue adventures,” she said.
