It got a lot of airplay.

I saw the story three times, on two different networks.

The problem is that there are only a few girls in the larger cities who will go to school. In the countryside there will be very, very few, if any.

Those that do go to school won't go very long, will have nothing which approximates a Western education.

Those that do get an education will do what you would do with your kids - send them off to a good school. There that means out of the country.

The news bits I saw stressed the aid coming from America - private donations, heartfelt, sincere, and kind. They aren't consistent, though, and not standardized so that education can be systematic. Schoolkids and school districts send what they have, not what is needed. If you have nothing, anything is needed, true, but over the longer haul they need more, better, and planned.

That country just ain't the US, or Mexico. It would be nice to see the US send everything which is needed for a school starting with generators and fuel, moving onto chairs and tables and books in their language in their "grade" levels, and so on.

Then a PR campaign which extolls the value of an education, and so on.

I just think a scattered, casual approach will have human interest news value, but no real effect.
