The Associated Press for some reason finally picks up on a story that talk radio and other libertarian/conservative outlets have been beating on for years.
The fact that a small percentage of high-income taxpayers pay most of the taxes while the vast majority of taxpayers pay few taxes has long been known. Why AP suddenly woke up to this is unknown.
In a democratic (small-d) society, since the people who don't pay much far outnumber the people who pay a lot, there is not a lot of perceived pressure for tax reductions by the general population. Surveys continually return results showing that a large percentage of Americans don't see tax cuts as critical. Well, naturally. A large percentage of Americans aren't paying squat.
They also point out the mathematical fact that across-the-board tax cuts must, by definition, give more tax relief to the higher brackets, a fact the Democrats gleefully exploit at every opportunity.
I got mine paid this year. Used Turbotax and electronic filing, both highly recommended. Only thing I had to mail was a small envelope with a check, and one form.
Plowing through the Interview mode of Turbotax, one can see the hideous and ludicrous complexity of our tax codes. There are taxes and tax breaks so bizarre that some of them probably only apply to one person. Even accepting the income tax, none of this crap is necessary to raise revenue.
Mainstream press finally catches a clue on tax brackets
