Possible Powell Visit Points To Syria's Importance
April 12, 2002
Washington is considering sending U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to Syria following his visit to Israel, Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported April 11. Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told Powell while meeting in Madrid April 11 that Russia would make diplomatic interventions with Syria and Iran to support Powell's Middle East peace efforts. Ivanov said that Moscow had been in touch with Syria, Iran and Lebanon to ask them to keep Lebanese militant group Hezbollah under control, a U.S. official said.
