"The world's most powerful nation's attorney general does not "make" the news. The world's most powerful nation's attorney general "is" the news. This being the case, if Ashcroft were to unexpectedly blow his nose in public, it would be a media event."

This is true of all political offices held in the U.S.A., but it is also tempered with the office itself. Exceptional people in exceptional positions get the coverage.
An idiot in the White House running the most powerful government on the face of the Earth is exceptional.
A religious fanatic holding the position of the highest legal authority in the most powerful government on the face of the Earth is exceptional.
A black secretary of state on a peace tour of the Middle East, and not getting himself shot or blown to bits, is exceptional.
The rapid, complete overthrow of a nation’s government by a global coalition, and knowing how “tough” it would be to even attempt this mighty feat, is exceptional.
That little Tommy Daschle is a whining piss-ant is not exceptional. This is par for the course he has chosen to follow. Now, if he were at all exceptional -- like, maybe if he cried to the press for more coverage...
