What a trip!! How did you know it was 36 nations - did you keep a diary or journal? Thank God for the Fumiko's. I think I know her.
One of the things I forget is how close everything is in Europe. A friend recently went from Denmark to Rome, by train, and it took about a day.
What did one do on, or in, a kibbutz in '79? Was it a vacation, work, or what?
Some of the most interesting and entertaining people I've ever met have been ne'er-do-well vagabonds, some of them in the most out-of-the-way, godforsaken places in the world. How they get along I'll never know, but they seem to make do. They glom onto anyone new who speaks a language they do, working them for meals and places to stay and whatever they can get.
One guy had "lost" his passport, and considered himself stuck in-country. Said he was an American, didn't want to go to the American consulate, didn't want to go near there, couldn't figure a way to live, couldn't figure a way to leave. I don't think I ever heard the full story, and have often wondered what happened to him. If I had a clue, I'd be tempted to write a story.
Anyway, thanks for sharing the story of the trip. And Good Morning!
