Re: Fair number from western hemisphere

Nice to see that Canada can outsell Saudi Arabia by a full 16 percent.

Oil exports from Iraq: $6 billion is equivalent to $255 per person annually (population 23.5 million). I don't know what the exchange rate is, but that wouldn't pay my rent. Before the Gulf War the oil industry was 95% of their export industry. It is currently back up to 3/4 of pre-war levels, but they are not exchanging for cash, they are bartering for food, medicine & some manufacturing products.

For comparison, reducing our own economy by 25%-50% would put a lot of people out of work. In fact it would put a lot of people out of their homes. What is happening in Iraq may be an example of what would happen in Canada if our oil exports (or steel, or lumber exports, for that matter) were reduced by 25 percent. It would cause a lot of hardship.

I wonder sometimes if American hatred of Iraq is justified. They invaded Kuwait, after all.
