It ain't the little monkey (a phrase I owe to RobVG), Tom. They're all pragmatic, a polite term for political, and they will all say they have to get elected to get any of their agenda covered.
I'd like to write his speech on this, though.
"There are those who will say that these tariffs run counter to the goal of globalization, to the goal of free trade, to the great goal of opening borders for a wonderful way of life for all peoples everywhere.
"Those people are wrong. America is at war, a great war against terrorism, a struggle which will go on for years, and in that war on terrorism, in that struggle against terrorists, we cannot allow our great nation to become dependent upon foreign nations for something so basic to our need to defend ourselves as steel.
"We need to be self-sufficient in the weapons we use against terrorists, and cannot allow any foreign power to choke off our access to those means we need to protect ourselves from the terrorism which threatens our way of life. Etc., etc., etc., yada yada yada".
He's covered. Some people will believe it.
