From what I understand Le Pen is a good debater - and Chirac would have to defend an indefendable amount of sleaze.
Chirac must pray the media can convince everyone Le Pen is the antichrist or that he actually likes american tourists - either one should condemn him sufficiently.
However, such refusal can be exploited and portrayed as the indefensible corrupt politician who can't face his opponent and is hiding amongst his huge piles of kickback francs.
