More than 40 women dressed in black stood in silent protest of worldwide violence on Friday on the Yellowstone County Courthouse lawn.
The protest was organized by Candace Forrette of Billings. It was modeled on the Women in Black series of anti-violence protests begun in 1988 in Israel and the Palestinian territories to demand an end to violence and call for justice and peace.
“I’m involved with a group of women who are concerned about the violence and horror of the past year,” Forrette said.
“My husband (Steve Paulson) was in Seattle and saw a Women in Black vigil. That got me to thinking about what a powerful visual image it is. I talked to some friends and spread the word so we could put our thoughts into concrete action.”
The Women in Black literature handed out at the vigil lists the numbers killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., as well as the continuing death toll in Afghanistan and in Israel.
It says the movement is international in origin, and each group is autonomous “but related in the way women stand in quiet vigil dressed in black.”
Forrette said she hasn’t decided if she will organize another Women in Black vigil.
