The attention span once the immediate concern is over is about that of a flea in a frying pan.
During the initial part of the campaign, GWB announced some billions of US aid to rebuild Afghanistan once the Taliban was gone.
Along the way there was great publicity surrounding the MREs dropped to refugees. Millions and millions of meals, which turned out to be something like 2 days food. Nothing like the international aid which was interrupted. Sounded good.
Then the Taliban was routed. Backpedalling, GWB told an economic conference in Japan that the US role was primarily to fund getting rid of the Taliban, and it was up to the rest of the world to rebuild the country.
And, they're not doing it. Not really their agenda, anyway.
It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, steps up to the plate.
Sad.

Sadly, a "given".
