“There are only medical supplies for 70,000 cases and we are expecting at least a quarter of a million this year.”
KABUL, Afghanistan -- IEO
A disfiguring skin disease that has already affected thousands of Afghans could reach epidemic proportions as the country lacks supplies for treatment, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned today.
“WHO would like to alert (everyone) to the threat of an epidemic” of the disease, Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, WHO spokeswoman Loretta Hieber Girardet said. “We have 100,000 people in Kabul alone who have the disease,” Hieber Girardet said. It was also found in the cities of Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar as well as southern Pakistan, where more than 9,000 people had contracted it.
