Unintended consequences

I'd never thought of this before, but one result of having nukes is that other people could develop an interest in keeping your government happy, stable, and secure.

In other words, they have an impact upon domestic, internal politics without every the thought of them being detonated.

In a country such as Pakistan, the US would about have to rescue the military dictatorship if that regime could convince the US that the nukes would fall into evil hands if the regime were overthrown.

Now, the US could offer to store them, sort of like gold in WWII.

"No, we'll keep them here, their ours, they are a part of our heritage, it would be like shipping all our mosques over there, we should have them here."

"We would give them back anytime you asked, if you wanted to throw one at someone. Promise. Promise with chocolate ice cream and a cherry on top!"

"Oh, kind sirs, that is so very nice of you, and we all trust and love each other. But what if someone were elected who didn't like Pakistan, who didn't like us, who wanted to see we didn't get our bombs?"

"Not to worry. As long as Scalia is Supreme Court Justice (Thomas' swollen tongue is due to a cold, not washing Scalia's car) there will be people who love and care for you and Pakistan."

Etc.

Far-reaching.
