While terrorist activity has decreased, several civilians have been killed and scores have been injured this year. In some areas of South Armagh up to a dozen marines can accompany one police officer to a call.

Troops from 42 Commando will be well-prepared if the global war on terror escalates to involve attacks on other countries.

As exclusively revealed in the Herald yesterday, Bickleigh-based 42 Cdo has been chosen as the lead commando group for a possible deployment next spring.

The move could place Plymouth commandos in some of the world's most volatile countries, like Iraq, the Sudan or Somalia.

But there will be few combat units better prepared for such an intensive mission.

By next spring, when the unit expects to be deployed on HMS Ocean for a possible offensive, it will have just completed an intensive and dangerous patrol of Northern Ireland.

It will also have been radically restructured with an additional 30 troops and more heavy weaponry. And 42 Cdo, which includes elements of Citadel-based 29 Cdo Regiment Royal Artillery 79 Battery, will have recently completed arduous mountain and cold weather training in the United States and Norway.
