I was under the impression that for many years it was actually illegal for the FBI and the CIA to get together to "connect their dots." Although all the "dots" seem obvious now to those with access to both FBI and CIA files, there may have been little else that could have been done with the data. Our security system has been shackled by many restrictions since the '60s backlash against government incursions into left wing political groups. Was this a bad idea, or a good idea? Didn't anyone know at the time that we were trading some security for more individual freedom?
Again, a perfect "Big Brother" government would make us safer. Think Singapore, where you once could get jailed fro throwing gum on the sidewalk. But is this really what we want? Lions in zoos live longer, safer, healthier lives than their cousins in the wild. But is that really the point of it all?
