MIRAMAR, San Diego, CA -- Source
Three five-member helicopter crews from Miramar Marine Corps Air Station have won the Frederick L. Feinberg Award for combat flights into Afghanistan when Marines seized an airfield there in late November.

The award is given annually by the AHS International -- Vertical Flight Society, an association dedicated to the advancement of vertical flight technology. It's the first time in 10 years Marines have been recipients.

The award honors the helicopter pilot or pilots who made the most outstanding achievement in the previous year. Six CH-53E helicopter crews flew roughly 400 miles from the Arabian Sea into southern Afghanistan, carrying the first large-scale contingent of ground forces to secure the airfield.

Thirty Marines, including 15 from Camp Lejeune, N.C., were named in the award.
