A-10s

In my Walter Mitty-like fantasies, flying an A-10 Warthog is tops.

In my imagination the sense of participation, of interacting with the environment, of being part of a common effort, and still getting to fly is greater in the A-10 than anything else. Speed is relative, and the closer to the ground one is the more of a sensation of speed one gets. Even a great helicopter. (A "Harrier" would be OK, but the range is too limited.)

Things would be more personal in an A-10, the pilot more a part of the action, the stakes a bit higher, the results more immediate to your fellows.
You can see people, wave, flip 'em the bird, and still be home for a COLD beverage. The best of all worlds.

They can keep their supersonic, fire-and-forget F-whatevers. I could sit in an office and manipulate icons on a CRT, imagine G-forces.

Given my druthers, if I had to do a job in the military again, I'd druther fly one of those than anything else.
