I remember when it was thought that conditions in LEO, particularly zero-G, would allow many industrial processes not possible on earth, and that an enormous amount of money would be made in space manufacturing. Nothing ever came of that that I know of.
On the other hand, communications, navigation and earth resources satellites have created enormously profitable industries. You really can't predict this stuff.
