On the subject of political activists cooking their numbers to influence policies, there's this article about the recent uproar over whether lawsuits from environmental groups hindered efforts to thin forests. They'd cited an incomplete GAO report claiming only 1% of the proposed thinning projects were impacted by lawsuits. They even posted the claim on their websites. The actual numbers from the Forest Service is 48%, not 1%. It seems corporate execs and government officials aren't the only ones to cook the books.
