US Space Command and US Strategic Command are merging, with the HQ being in Omaha. The name for the combined organization is... US Strategic Command. In short, there is (or soon will be) no more US Space Command.
In some ways, this reorg goes against Rumsfeld's on Space Commission recommendations. He hasn't seen fit to brief me on the reasons for the change, so I really don't know for sure why it's happening. I've heard that the formation of the new Northern Command may have something to do with it, especially the decision to locate it here in Colorado Springs. NORAD, a Joint US/Canada organization, will become part of NorthCom and quite a bit of the rest of US Space Command will go over to StratCom. There were political issues driving this decision. First, there are issues with the Canadians being active in StratCom. From what I've heard, the Canadians wanted no part of that. In addition, there was no way that they were going to have 3 four-star billets here in Colorado Springs and none in Omaha, so that's why the headquarters will stay in Nebraska. Many of the workers will stay here in Colorado because that's where the work is located (Cheyenne Mountain, Schriever, etc.)
