Syria Denies Funneling Weapons to Iraq

Syria's UN ambassador accused Israel on Tuesday of manufacturing a story that it is funnelling weapons to Iraq to ruin Syria's relationship with the United States.

Israeli military analyst Zeev Schiff wrote in the Haaretz newspaper Monday that weapons and military equipment, mainly from eastern Europe, were being shipped to Syrian ports and then sent to Iraq by road and rail, in violation of a UN arms embargo. The report gave no source for the information.

“They are giving such stories because they don't like peace, and because they know that Syria is a very independent country,” Ambassador Mikhail Wehbe said in an interview.

“They want to create some kind of story whenever they see the United States having some kind of relations with Syria. They want to ruin this relationship -- as simple as that,” he said.
