U.S. opposes U.N.’s torture proposal

<Washington wary about idea of independent visits to prisons.

"UNITED NATIONS, July 24 — Concerned about the possibility of independent visits to U.S. civilian and military prisons, the United States sought Wednesday to block a vote on a U.N. plan meant to enforce a convention on torture. The move sets up another possible showdown with some of Washington’s closest allies who support the proposal and have been irritated recently by the Bush administration’s refusal to ratify international agreements."

I don’t understand it. We proudly prattle on about how the US leads the world in human rights, and don’t want anyone to see it?

Doesn’t seem to be an end to the effort to convince the world the US is a “rogue” nation.
