We just don't like 'em too quiet.
Afghanistan is going fine. The Afghan Army is being developed to take responsibility for its own nation, and the governmental influence in Kabul is beginning to spread. There is also the support from various neighboring countries. The holdouts are the warlords, but then that's always been the problem. I think they should be brought in as district managers or regional governors, but then there's the issue of drawing up internal borders -- as well as teaching the villagers how to read a map.
It ain't easy, but it is happening.
