"(Ms Macapagal) is virtually begging Uncle Sam to take an active combat role in government's war against the revolutionary forces," Reyes said.

The 'all-out' offensive against communist rebels and the 'continued American involvement' in Philippine military operations are reminiscent of events that led to the 1960's Vietnam War, the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) warned on Wednesday.

"(President Gloria Macapagal) Arroyo is setting the stage for another Vietnam War," Bayan spokesperson Renator Reyes said in a statement.

"She is intent on escalating the civil war between the NPA and the government, paving the way for Vietnam-style U.S. intervention in the country," Reyes added.

Robert de Castro, deputy secretary general of the left-wing party Bayan Muna, expressed alarm the "real targets" of Macapagal's heightened campaign are legal organizations and worker's groups critical of her administration's policies.
