Female in general and female children in particular are not held in high esteem by Muslims. I suspect that girls tend to get get inferior post-natal care and ongoing pediatric care.

Outright killing of female offspring is a well known problem in India and I would not be shocked to find that it occurs in Muslim countries as well.
