Who owns the rights to ideas conceived by scholars while working on university projects? Cambridge is trying to change the rules...

But what about the students? When I was doing my course outline for my engineering degree, I wondered what happens during our final year when we do the whole device inception-thru-implementation project. What if a student, not the staff advisor, comes up with some killer app or device? Does the entire project, including intellectual property dreamt of by the students, automatically belong to the professorr/university and not the students? I can see how it would... you know, sorta' "paying your dues".
I'm not concerend with myself falling into this predicament. I'd be lucky to just not electrocute someone along the way, but I was just curious...
