The newspaper quotes U.S. intelligence officials as saying they are investigating reports about recent gold shipments.
A U.S. newspaper is reporting the al-Qaida terrorist network and Afghanistan's ousted Taleban regime shipped large amounts of gold from Pakistan to Sudan in recent weeks.
The Washington Post, citing unidentified European, Pakistani and U.S. sources, says several shipments were taken by boat from the Pakistani port of Karachi to either Iran or the United Arab Emirates. From there, the report says, the gold was flown by chartered airplanes to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
Sources told the newspaper Sudan was chosen because al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and other members of the group were familiar with the African country and had business contacts there.
