<''A lot of people wouldn't care if Saddam was overthrown. But no Iraqi believes the United States is actually interested in bringing democracy here,'' says Wamidh Nadhmi, 61, a senior political science professor at Baghdad University. ''People believe Americans are just interested in Iraqi oil.''
I've read and heard (BBC and other english sources) that the Iraqis just want to live normally again and especially want the sanctions lifted and don't care about Saddam.
After all, he's no "saint" as Iraq is a secular state. In fact, they might welcome a US invasion as they hope it'd be the last time before they can finally go ahead with their lives.
About the oil issue, well (both on Fr3 and BBC1) I've heard the oil issue is misleading.
What's going on now is against the interest of oil companies as the market is uncertain and extremely volatile while they much prefer stability.
And if oil was so badly needed, the sanctions would have been lifted long ago!
The irony is that the sanctions do help Saddam confort his power as oil is being taken by trucks out of the country rather than through the pipelines. The money from smuggling oil out of the country goes to...everybody knows who!
