Shockingly, this would appear to be no exaggeration at all. According to Hussein biographer Said K. Aburish (who is more sympathetic to his subject than most western biographers have been), Saddam is more than willing to execute not only the innocent, but even avid supporters of his regime if it suits his purposes. He's apparently taken Stalinism to a whole new level.
