I've been thinking the same thing. It could be something like this or this. These weapons would be much easier to hide than a rifle and accurate enough at the ranges the shooter is said to favor (80 - 150 yards). Reportedly, many of the shots are coming from woods, so the guy could be disappearing on a motorcycle. The "light colored van" seem leaving the scene could well be a coincidence.
