Apparently he was furious every time he called (was it the police?) they hung up on him, not believing his story. Then, he betrayed himself by revealing a theft committed months ago in Alabama. After an inquiry, he was identified.
Criminals like him are often in desperate need for recognition, so much so they are ready to run the risk of being identified. That's what ends their sordid game.
