My display shows "read" and "unread" posts in sharply different colors. I typically track a thread to the bottom of the page, and sometimes beyond for really good ones.
Don't worry that we won't catch your stuff attached to other threads...we're pretty good about it (although I have missed some good posts, and even reposted information that someone already posted earlier: a "deja vu" post.)
You really don't need to push stuff up to the top, unless a thread has moved off to another page, and in that case a link to the earlier thread is good form.
