Liberty on the nose:
Aviation Structural Mechanic 3rd Class Jeff Jarvis, one of nearly 5,500 sailors and aviators on board, paints "nose art" on an F/A-18E Super Hornet on the first day of air operations from the carrier in the North Arabian Gulf on Oct. 29. Jarvis has painted many of the jets while on deployment since July.

On Oct. 29, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its carrier battle group, which includes guided missile cruisers, destroyers, frigates, replenishment ships and submarines, began air operations in the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch over Iraq, after being deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom over Afghanistan. Aircraft launched from the carrier’s 4.5-acre flight deck will patrol the southern no-fly zone over Iraq. Click the links above for pictures of the carrier, its aircraft and crew.
