From a purely objective standard, this whole "illegal employee" thing is a tempest in a teapot, compared to a lot of other issues on which a Senator is elected.
However, a good and intelligent woman, Linda Chavez, was pilloried by the press and denied a Bush appointment as Labor Secretary on just such a charge.
