The World Bank restarted its lending to Afghanistan in April with $10 million for emergency public administration projects, the first loan to the country since 1979.
BERLIN -- Reuters
The United States hopes a conference on Afghanistan next week will agree to clear away the country's debts to international institutions, opening the way to significant new loans, a U.S. diplomat said on Friday.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai plans to visit the former German capital of Bonn on Monday to meet foreign ministers from neighboring countries and officials from Western nations to discuss the country's future.
Afghanistan owes international financial institutions $47 million, a relatively small sum compared with the billions of dollars the new government says it needs to rebuild from decades of war.
