<"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."
For this statement, Lott is doomed. There is no way the Left and their media flunkies will let go of this hammerlock on him until he resigns as Majority Leader. No doubt Democrats are going to try to drive him all the way out of the Senate.
It was a stupid statement, and the more I researched it, the stupider it got. Thurmond ran in 1948 as a "States Rights Democrat," specifically on the issue of segregation. Not the economy, not military spending, not the Second Amendment, or any other issue that might reasonably be considered a source of "problems over all these years." Basically, just segregation.
So what I first thought was a rather vague supportive comment started to look more and more like it could only be interpreted as a support of segregation. That this is what he actually meant is of course ludicrous. I can't locate one example of Lott engaging in any action as a Senator that could even vaguely be interpreted as supporting racism, unless you are one of those people who assumes that any Republican has to be a racist regardless.
Well, I wanted him out as Major for other reasons, although nobody better for Majority Leader pops immediately to mind.
Lott doomed
